What's all this talk of card counting in blackjack?

I have tried card counting. most of the time the true count stays at 0 or a negative. the most I have seen it go it up to a +6 on average, I bet my units and lose. has anyone been successful at card counting? What has been the highest plus count that you have seen?

just because the count is in the plus.. 15 to 20 points. Does not mean you are going to win. It takes the house advantage away and can put the advantage in the players arena.. this still does not mean you are going to win.
take 50 or so players that only bet when the count is 15 plus. the team will win.. BUT.. not every player will win.
I have played a 6 deck shoe that was 18 to the plus..
AND LOST BIG!!!

Does Card-Counting Work For Spanish21? « Discount Gambling

I’ve heard all the stories about card-counting, and almost managed to watch the entire movie “21″, but I never really saw how card-counting could help against a 6-deck shoe.  Well, since it was really easy to add to my Spanish21 program, I devised a simple hi/lo balanced count:

CardsValue2, 3, 4, 5+1J, Q, K, A-1

Next, I wanted to see the correlation between the running count of the shoe, and the expectation value (EV) of the next hand out of the shoe. So I ran the simulator for a million shoes, and plotted the average hand net result vs. the running count:

Simulation of simple hi/lo count for Spanish21.

I was surprised to see the very linear correlation between the running count of the shoe, and the profitability of the next hand out of the shoe. Counting works. I never saw this data before (probably because few people want to see this type of thing), but it’s the clearest way for me to see the benefits of counting. And these results were obtained by playing the unmodified basic strategy for the game. Note that the player has almost a 2% edge when the count is +10. And the game is always profitable when the count is positive.  (Oh, if we could only sit out while the deck is negative …) obviously, results will improve by implementing more complicated counting systems (e.g., true counts, based on shoe depth, modifying basic strategy for the count, etc.). but, it’s nice to know that the most basic type of counting yields a positive edge for the game.

As another simple experiment, I added a simple modified betting strategy based on the count:

ConditionBetcount ? -50 (sit out)-5 < count < 01×0 ? count < 102×10 ? count < 153xcount ? 154x

where a bet of 1x indicates your standard bet, and 2x is twice your standard bet, etc. This simple betting strategy using the simple running hi/lo count, and the unmodified basic strategy made the game net profitable (+0.41% of the 1x bet), vs. the normal -0.45% loss rate.

When you are card counting the regular way, when should you start making big bets (blackjack)?

I've known how to play blackjack for years but I never got into it until like a couple weeks ago. Ive been researching about card counting and I was just wondering when I should make big bets. The casino works with 6 decks and I understand that 2-6 is +1 and 10-Ace is -1……so should I wait until 3 or 4 decks of cards have been dealt and then make bigger bets if the count is good? or should I start betting higher as soon as the count is a +?

Ya .. might have it backwords there… small cards are a – big are + you want to bet in a – situation. The fewer smaller cards in the deck the better ( 4 U )… Dealer has less chance of getting a 17.

You playing a 6 deck shoe… played 2/3 of the way.. the count is – 15 or better.. Time to rock.. ( In my book )

There is SO much to answering this question correctly. You aren't going to learn what you need to learn from this forum. it depends on your count. it depends on how deep you are into the shoe. it depends on your bankroll. to do card counting right, you really need to read a book thoroughly and study a lot until you've got everything down cold. It's not a simple thing to count cards correctly.

mr.longshot has it backwards, by the way. You were correct in saying that you start thinking of making larger bets with a plus count, not a minus. (Unless he has some sort of system that's backwards from all the other systems out there. perhaps every time a low card comes out, he calls that -1. Again, that would be different from just about everyone on the planet.
